 GIS has traditionally been an office based activity. But it is field operators who collect and maintain the underlying data, and have the greatest need for GIS services.  The
recent availability of low priced and powerful mobile computers, along
with the launch of GBM Mobile software, means it is now possible to
service mobile workers with an “out-of-the-box” MapInfo
based mapping and data solution. In the near future there are likely to
be many more field workers using mobile GIS than operators of
office based GIS systems. Most mobile workers are still serviced with
paper maps. Field data is recorded on paper forms for subsequent data
entry. These processes are cumbersome, time consuming, error prone and
